APAAR ID for Students: Details Parents Should Verify Before Creation

Indian education explainer | Updated 20 September 2026

A permanent student identifier is useful only when it is connected to the correct student information. A spelling difference, wrong date of birth or confusion about the school record should therefore be examined before APAAR ID creation rather than discovered during a later admission or document process.

This article explains the official APAAR information currently available to families. It does not replace a school’s authorised process and does not ask parents to share Aadhaar or other identity details through unofficial websites, messages or agents.

What APAAR means

APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. The official APAAR portal describes it as a specialised student-identification system associated with “One Nation, One Student ID” and the National Education Policy 2020.

The portal says the identifier is a unique 12-digit code intended to help students store and access academic credits and records. This description should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every historical certificate will instantly appear or that every record has already been digitised.

How the official process is described

The APAAR FAQ identifies four broad steps: verification of demographic details through the school, parental consent for a minor, authentication through the school and creation of the ID. Once successfully generated, the ID is made available through DigiLocker.

Parents should therefore begin with the recognised school authority. Avoid a website or caller claiming to create an APAAR ID independently in exchange for a fee. Confirm instructions with the school using contact information you already trust.

Check the name carefully

The official FAQ states that the student name in UDISE+ should match the name associated with Aadhaar for generation. It also lists the student’s Permanent Education Number, or PEN, as a prerequisite.

Ask the school to show or read back the relevant student-record fields through its authorised procedure. Compare spelling, spacing, initials and name order carefully. Do not casually alter one record merely to make a screen accept it; first determine which record requires legitimate correction and which authority can make that correction.

Verify the other student information

Families should verify student records and complete the authorised school consent process before APAAR ID generation.

The APAAR portal lists data fields used in the process, including the student’s name, date of birth, gender, mobile number and parent details, along with the relevant identifiers. Check each field against appropriate records.

Use a private checklist instead of circulating identity documents in parent messaging groups. If a mismatch exists, note the exact field and ask the school what authorised correction process applies.

Understand parental consent

The official process explicitly mentions parental consent when the student is a minor. Read the consent information supplied through the authorised school process before agreeing. Ask what data is being used, for what purpose and how a correction can be requested.

Do not sign a blank form. Keep a copy or acknowledgement where the process permits it. Consent should relate to a clearly explained process, not to unrelated commercial services.

Where students can check the generated ID

The official APAAR FAQ says a generated ID is pushed to the student’s DigiLocker account and can be found in issued documents. It also says schools can review generation status through the APAAR module in UDISE+.

If the card does not appear immediately, first ask the school to check whether creation succeeded or remains pending. Do not keep submitting different spellings or dates in an attempt to generate multiple records.

A useful family checklist

  • Confirm that the request came through the recognised school.
  • Check the student’s UDISE+ name and PEN with the school.
  • Compare name and date of birth against legitimate identity records.
  • Read the parental-consent information for a minor.
  • Keep the school acknowledgement or reference.
  • Check DigiLocker only after the school confirms generation.
  • Report any suspected duplicate or incorrect ID through the official route.

Protect student data

Do not post the APAAR number, Aadhaar number, birth date or screenshots containing student information publicly. If technical support requests a screenshot, redact information that is not required and use only the official support process.

Conclusion

APAAR creation should begin with accurate school records, informed parental consent and careful identity matching. Families do not need to guess their way through mismatched data. Verify first, use the authorised school process and preserve a record of any correction request.
